What Bowflex Revolution® Home Gym owners are saying...

About a year ago my weight was 235-240 and I felt bad all the time. My doctor told me I needed to start exercising. I bought the Revolution, but never had the discipline to use it. After my doctor visit I decided it was time to get started. So I began working out pretty much every day and a year later I now weigh 200 with 18" arms and a 50" chest. The best thing I like about the Revolution is that my joints never hurt. I used to work out when I was in the Marine Corps and my joints would hurt due to the free weights. Now I am over 48 years old and working out harder than I used to with absolutely no joint pain. I just wanted to say thank you for your machine that has kept me going and I am sure will keep me going for years to come. I actually enjoy working out every day now.

SpiraFlex® Plates

Lightweight platesThe SpiraFlex® plates of the Bowflex Revolution® home gym enable smooth, consistent resistance through the entire range of motion, a principal ingredient in developing lean, strong muscle.

The versatility of these lightweight interlocking plates allows you to quickly and easily adjust resistance weight on the Bowflex Revolution® home gym from 10 to 300 lbs (up to 600 lbs with the leg press station) for a quiet, gym-quality workout at home.

SpiraFlex® technology duplicates the benefits of free weights and plate-loaded machines to deliver the smoothest, most versatile at-home workout available.

Compact Design

Space efficient for your home: Folds to 4½ft x 3ftThe Bowflex Revolution® home gym was conceived and designed to combine all the strength-building exercise equipment at your local gym into one machine that fits neatly in your home.

To meet this challenge, the engineers combined cutting-edge SpiraFlex® resistance technology with the geometrically designed cam system used for over 20 years in Nautilus® equipment.

The result is not merely a piece of fitness equipment but a self-contained, at-home gym with over 100 exercises, up to 400 variations and a range of resistance from 10 to 300 lbs, (up to 600 lbs with the leg press station). And it's all concentrated in one smart, space-efficient machine measuring just 9ft x 5ft, shrinking to 4½ft x 3ft when folded.

With the Bowflex Revolution® home gym, you get a gym-quality workout at home without sacrificing a lot of time or space.

Freedom Arms™

170° adjustable Freedom Arms™The unique variable independent pulleys, or Freedom Arms™, of the Bowflex Revolution® home gyms adjust 170° with 10 different settings so you can quickly and easily change the direction of resistance and work upper-body muscles from a variety of angles.

This versatility enables you to get a complete, gym-quality workout every time, varying your routine as often as desired to accommodate your developing fitness level.

Finally, because of the SpiraFlex® technology, every exercise with the Freedom Arms™ delivers ultra-smooth, consistent resistance through the entire range of motion - an important ingredient in building lean, strong muscle.

Smoothness

Cam design delivers consistent linear resistance throughout the entire range of motion. The Bowflex Revolution® home gym delivers smooth yet strong gym-quality resistance that remains consistent through each exercise. The secret is the cutting-edge SpiraFlex® resistance technology.

Developed for use on the International Space Station, SpiraFlex® resistance provides even, consistent linear resistance necessary for building and maintaining lean, strong muscle. Lean muscle is the most efficient fat burner in the body.

Gone are the bulky, cumbersome weights common in many home gyms. SpiraFlex® resistance achieves its signature smoothness in part due to the heavy-gauge elastic straps powering its lightweight SpiraFlex® plates. As an exercise is initiated, the plate's bands tighten around a central pivot coil, creating resistance.

The Bowflex Revolution® home gym incorporates this revolutionary resistance technology with the geometrically designed cam to deliver linear, consistent resistance through the entire range of motion.

By combining the Bowflex Revolution® home gym's Freedom Arms™ with SpiraFlex® technology, the Bowflex Revolution® home gym provides incredibly smooth movement through each exercise, no matter the weight.

International Space Station

Space Station strength-training technology now available at homeAs free weights are ineffective in the microgravity environment of space, the International Space Station needed another way for crewmembers to maintain muscle strength while in orbit. The answer was SpiraFlex® resistance technology.

Astronauts can expect to suffer a 1- to 2-percent loss in bone mass per month while in space. The diminished gravity also means that their muscles are not required to work as hard, greatly increasing the risk of muscle degeneration, or atrophy.

SpiraFlex® technology helps combat this deterioration by duplicating the benefits of free weights in a lightweight, safe, easy-to-use system. The smooth, consistent resistance allows the astronauts to build and maintain lean, strong muscle while in orbit and return to earth healthy.

The same technology is now available on earth

The versatile, compact Bowflex Revolution® home gym offers you the same benefits of consistent resistance that the astronauts enjoy. Even the toughest exercises feel smooth without the inertia commonly associated with free weights. Find out how easy it is to build lean, strong muscle fast.

For perspective, a little about myself:
I am 6'3", 215 lbs, & in my early 40s. I'm not a professional or competitive, but I read a lot about training techniques and have had a lot of training in fitness and weight lifting over the past 30 years. I've used free weights and all different types of machines in gyms and at home. I've been using the Bowflex Revolution a few times a week for over 6 months.

I like the Revolution enough to give it 5 stars, but I gave it 4, because a few things could be improved. It's sturdy, well made, comfortable, and folds up easily. My condo building has a multi-station machine, but I prefer working out on the Revolution.

It took some time to assemble, but the instructions are very good, and it's packaged based on the order of the instructions. READ THE INSTRUCTIONS TO ASSEMBLE.

Most importantly for me, I get a good workout on the machine. It's not hard to set it up for an exercise, add weight, or make adjustments to a set (angles, alignment, etc.). What would have made this better would be to have the plates built into the machine and engaged with a button like a pin in a racked system. This would allow a husband and wife to alternate sets without adding & removing the plates each time.

Some exercises take longer than others to set up. You'll need to take this into consideration if you plan to switch to a burn set. For example, I would like to go immediately from my last seated squat to a leg extension to get a good burn in my quads, but the setup takes too long to do it without a break.

The standard plate set may be a little light for a serious seated squat workout, but you can order the extra plates if you need them.

I was a little concerned when I read that the cables were ropes and not metal wire. However, I find the combination of the rope cables and elastic bands feel smoother than metal cables and sliding metal plates. It's only been 6 months, but I see no sign of wear on any part of the machine.

I was also concerned about whether I would be able to get a full range of motion with my height. The only time I run out of room is when I extend my legs all the way using it as a row machine for cardio. Rowing is not an intense cardio exercise, so I mostly use it for warm up. I haven't used a lot of other row machines to compare, but it seems adequate. It would help to have straps to keep your feet on the foot rests.

A cable machine like the Revolution does a pretty good job mimicking free weights and working your supporting muscles. On the Revolution, you have to think about the angle of the cables and adjust your body to concentrate on a muscle group. You can make endless adjustments to change angles.

I used a luggage scale to test the resistance. Each plate is accurate, but the overall weight is about 2 lbs less than what is loaded. For example, the 40 lb plate gives you 38 lbs of resistance. Adding the 5 lb plate brings you up to 43 lbs. As advertised, the resistance is consistent through the full motion of the rep.

I gave the Revolution 4 stars instead of 5 for not being perfect, but in my research and experience, I think it rates 5 stars compared to other available machines.

Comments about Bowflex Revolution Home Gym:

This product is great day to day. The main problem is the ease of use. Attaching the 20 and 40lb weights takes some strength because you're turning the plate against that much spiraband resistence. When I started I would just get my husband to do it! Also, the leg workouts aren't as efficient as the upper body and core work outs but you can supplement that with another machine or work out. Overall though, a great home gym and a great way to tone up and/or build.

It is so convenient right there in my house ready to go when I am.
Nothing is not great about it, it was intimidating at first, but if you watch the video, use the manual it comes with practice, and more info is available to get online.
I am soo happy I got it, now I have to keep the promise to myself to get with it and use it and get fit.

Comments about Bowflex Revolution Home Gym:

I find the best exercises are for the chest and arm. The legs are pretty good for a home gym, with the caveat that you between 5'4" and 6'2" in height. The design of the leg curl could use some improvement, with the resistance falling off significantly at the top. You can get a decent shoulder workout, the one point of deficiency what is available for the back and traps. I've supplimented with equipment that provides pulldown, pullups and free weights for bent over rows. Lastly, you still need something for aerobics and situps. However, over this is a very good piece of equipment.

One point that is noteworthy. I've had rotorcuff surgery on one shoulder, with the other getting ready. The workouts I'm getting are making my non-repaired shoulder feel like new, perhaps I won't need the next operation!

I had the Ultimate (Rod technology) previously and really liked the increase in tension the further you bent the rods, it really helped me get into shape faster I believe. The Revolution is a bit heavier but is really smoothe. I like the "Preacher Curl" attachment and the leg press. Still getting comfortable with it, but plan on using it as long as it lasts.., which should be a long time as it is really built tough and durable (why it's a bit heavy).

I assume you're asking if it has resistance on both the positive (lifting) and negative (lowering) phases of the various movements. It indeed does, and the fact that the machine has very little friction to overcome makes it even more effective in both directions.

The Bowflex Revolution uses the innovative SpiraFlex technology, which duplicates the benefits of free weights. Basically, the resistance plates provide consistent, linear resistance during the entire range of motion.

The Bowflex Revolution is designed to work the muscles in every major body zone. For a breakdown on which muscles are used for each exercise, please feel free to download the online Owner's Manual at www.bowflex.com/manuals.

              I am 6'8" and weigh 325 lbs. I can deadlift 275 and bench 350. I am worried that -
              1) the revolution equipment won't handle the strain and the throw (length of motion) of the exercises, and
              2) the bench and tower will give under the stress or self destruct.
Can someone with similar size or experience address these concerns?

My husband is 6'7" and 310 lbs. The upper body excercises are great for him and it actually is easier since he has a better reach for the handles than myself. The leg press and the cardio rowing is the only issue as he cannot fully extend his legs, but the other leg excercises work well for him.

I am wondering how well the rowing function works and whether this function alone makes this product better than the smaller XP?

I recently bought a bowflex revolution and I have a question about the resistance. I tried the 40lbs resistance plates and it was very difficult to lift. With free weights, I can press 80lbs dumbbells. Is the indicated resistance equilavent to the actual free weights?

                A:

The Revolution resistance should feel very similar to the resistance from free weights, although some exercise are more comparable to the motions performed on a weight stack or plate loaded machine at a gym. Depending on the specific exercise you may find you need to adjust the amount of resistance you used compared to what you would use with free weights. As you build strength and increase your resistance, you should find that your gains enable you to use more weight on your free weight exercises as well.
